Are there any towns in your area that have funny names?

Give an example of a strange town name in your area.

Where did the name come from?

Who named the town?

Why do you think it is strange?

We live near a town called EdCouch (the accent is on the first syllable). I have never seen a town with a last name before. In addition, it is next to another small town and the two are often hyphenated as EdCouch-Elsa.

Pronounced Can-a-jo-hairy. The area I live in is rich in Native American history. It is one of the earliest areas of the country to be settled and colonized. Much of the American Revolutionary War took place here. The Iroquois Indian nation heavily populated much of the state. The Mohawk tribe, a part of the Iroquois nation lived here. The name Canajoharie comes from the Mohawk language. It translates to "the pot that washes itself". This comes from a swimming hole located here that is part of the Canajoharie Creek. This swimming hole is quite big maybe 25 feet across and perfectly circular. The turbulence from the creek causes the water in the swimming hole to constantly rotate . Hence the name "the pot that washes itself".

Connecticut has some interesting place names. Skipping over Sodom (for obvious reasons), there’s:

    1. Headquarters. Up in the backwoods of Litchfield. It’s on all the state maps but, if you go there...there’s nothing, just 2 roads that cross in the woods. But once upon a time it was the staging area for Litchfield County troops in the Civil War. They would organize there and then march down the mountain to the railroad to ship out.

    2. Dodgingtown. In Newtown, right on the Bethel border. Back in the olden days, when town lines were not really well established the residents used to scam the town tax collectors there. If the Bethel tax collector showed up they claimed to be in Newtown, if the Newtown collector showed up, they claimed to be in Bethel.

    3. Bedlam. Located in the town of Chaplin...probably the lowest key, laidbackest town in the state.
