Unless a court overturns this, Suffolk's voters will only see the incumbent Treasurer, D.A., and Sheriff on their ballots. "They decreed a Soviet-style Ballot in Suffolk," said Libertarian D.A. nominee Chris Garvey. Thousands, who signed the Libertarian Petition, will now be denied any ballot choice of candidate. Voters' can protest by writing-in another choice, such as Libertarians Audrey Capozzi for Suffolk County Treasurer, Steven Kosin for Sheriff, and Chris Garvey for District Attorney. The Republican and Democrat Parties appointed the Commissioners, who determine who appears on the ballot. Candidates received notice of the decision on Friday of the Labor Day weekend, and must file suit by Tuesday. The Board refused to give reasons for their decision on Friday. Mr. Garvey has twice participated in Federal cases, that determined New York's election laws were unconstitutional. Albany has designed New York's election laws to place heavier burdens on minor parties. For these offices, Libertarians need 1,500 signatures, while major parties need far fewer. Large parties have first crack at soliciting signatures. Voters who signed one petition can't later sign a Libertarian petition. Libertarians can only witness signatures after the major parties, during only six weeks in July and August, after the 4th-of-July crowds have dissipated, and when many voters are away on vacation. -30-
